Starting to Learn at Home: Tips for Parents

Quality of Education Is Not Where It Should Be

When it comes to being a parent, our job is never finished and our to-do list is continually growing. The last thing we want to hear is that our children are not getting everything they need academically. But, here we are, post-COVID, facing a national teaching shortage, and mounting frustrations with school administration.

After COVID, many parents went as far as pulling their children out of school completely. Homeschooling went up approximately 700%, and there are many reasons to consider it as an option.

But what do you do if it is not an option for your household? Though it may seem overwhelming, it's actually easy to do, and achievable, even in-between hectic work weeks.

What can I do?

Children are neural sponges who need consistent engagement for healthy development, and though you may not be able to give them your attention 24/7, you can start by committing to 15 minutes.

You may wonder how much of a difference 15 minutes can make, but when you read with or to your child for just 15 minutes a day, that adds up to over 91 hours by the end of the year. Children who consistently are exposed to reading increase their vocabulary, critical thinking, concentration, and reduces stress. On the other hand, children who do not receive enough literacy support can lead to behavior problems as way to communicate their frustrations with their learning struggle.

How Do I Start?

If you're wondering how you can get started, you can go to our Resource Page and see our free storybook activities. If you are looking to get access to books, join your local library or sign up to receive free children's books through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

Even if you don't feel like you have the time to print out resources or order books tonight, start simply by looking up children's books on YouTube and follow along the story or pause it to read it to your child. Whatever you decide, just decide to start now. Because 15 minutes a day is a world of difference.
